Maintenance of a normal platelet count is critical for patients receiving surgical interventions in order to prevent uncontrolled bleeding. Cancer patients who undergo chemotherapy and/or bone marrow transplant have low platelet counts and require frequent platelet transfusions to prevent bleeding. Patients receiving repetitive platelet transfusions often develop anti-platelet antibodies. These antibodies mark the platelets for destruction by the complement system, a condition known as platelet refractoriness.

RLS-0088 works to block destruction of transfused platelets and prevent uncontrolled bleeding, especially for necessary surgeries and interventions. In a Phase 0 study assessing human plasma samples from platelet refractory patients, RLS-0088 was shown to effectively inhibit platelet destruction.
